People have always predicted the worst. With the lack of science and technology, people tried to explain bad luck and disaster. Superstitions were started and were often associated with specific time periods, such as the end of decades or centuries.
Superstitions were passed down from one generation to the next. Some of the ones used mostly today are: Never let a woman enter your house first on New Year's Day, she will bring bad luck. If a man enters first he will bring good luck.
It was considered good luck and the way to start the year if you ate black-eyed peas cooked with hog jowl (this is a piece of the hogs jaw). Obviously this is still considered good luck as it is still a main New Year's dish for many families.
