Sheriff Larry Sherertz agrees with concerns expressed recently about the intersection of the internal road of the Rappahannock National Bank’s “Commercial Centre” with Schoolhouse Road.
According to the preliminary plans, the proposed road enters the commercial center just to the east of Schoolhouse Road near the new bank building, passes through the property, and enters Schoolhouse Road just opposite the bus entrance at the elementary school.
The sheriff agreed with the concerns voiced by county resident Ken Estes at this month’s School Board meeting, and suggested that a cul de sac, with no outlet to Schoolhouse Road, would better serve the interest of public safety.
“I really am against it. I think it will cause confusion . . . danger ... it will exacerbate an already dangerous situation,” the sheriff said.
He said that he sees more than 100 children being dropped off and picked up every day at the school by parents, and he thought that a through street at the commercial center would cause confusion and conflict between commercial vehicles and the line of cars dropping off or waiting for children.
He said that the cul de sac approach would be of benefit because it would keep commercial vehicles away from the school and it would not necessitate a traffic light at the intersection of Schoolhouse Road and Route 211.
