Sitting astride highway 211 in Rappahannock County, Gray Ghost vineyard is one of Virginia’s small-sized wineries producing 3,200 cases of wine per year.
It is a family operation with owners A1 and Cheryl Kellert doing most of the work of winemaking and tending the grapes and daughter Amy Payette handling marketing.
During the busy summer schedule, when the vines can grow one inch per day, this family staff is augmented by paid high school students on summer vacation.
At harvest time, when even more help is required, volunteers who have become fans of the vineyard lend a hand.
The name of the Gray Ghost winery refers to Col. John S. Mosby whose 400 Confederate troops harassed the flanks of the Union army thus assisting Gen. Robert E. Lee and his Army
