The three films reviewed here have no theme — and are quite different — except that we really liked them all.
The first is an American love story, which can make you laugh AND cry; the second a murder mystery disguised as a study of the British class system, (and sometimes a comedy); and the third, a warm, tender Mexican fable which explores a clash of cultures and hometown values.
Herb laughed at all three (in the appropriate parts) and didn’t fall asleep during any of them, which is a very good sign.
Return To Me: 2000, PG, about 2 hours. David Duchovny (of The XFiles fame) and the lovely Minnie Driver star with a hugely talented cast including David Alan Grier, Bonnie Hunt, James Belushi and Joely Richardson. Carroll O’Connor and Robert Loggia star as Grandpa and Grandpa-in-law of Grade (Minnie Driver), who together own O’Neil’s Irish Italian Restaurant, which specializes in corned beef and cabbage with pasta and tomato sauce. The Irish-Italian contrast is a continuing theme through the movie, and there’s a fabulous bunch of old guys who sit around the restaurant after hours to drink, play poker, dedde the fate of the world and constantly debate who is the best singer among Dean Martin,
