He was a member of the Society of the Cincinnati in the state of Virginia, as the greatgreat-great-grandnephew of Second Lt. Gabriel Green Sixth Regiment, Virginia Continental Line (the Culpeper Minutemen).
He was a 32nd Degree Mason in Alexandria Washington Lodge 22; a member of the Scottish Rite, Valley of Alexandria, Orient of Virginia; and Noble in the Kena Shrine Temple, Arlington.
In 1976, he retired from his job in Washington and moved with his family from Alexandria, Virginia to his small farm in Sperryville.
Mr. Herndon is survived by his wife Florence Eliza-Jane Beale Herndon; two sons, Maurice Gordon Herndon, Jr. of Sperryville, and Edwin Beale Herndon of Frederick, Md..; three granddaughters and two great-grandsons.
Funeral services were held at Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington, on Jan. 26. Interment was in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Woodville.
