Insurance executive
Maurice Gordon Herndon died at his residence, “Greenock Farm,” near Sperryville on Jan. 23. He was 91.
Mr. Herndon was educated at the Force School, Washington, DC.; Suffolk High School, Suffolk, Va. and the College of William and Mary.
He then worked in Suffolk as a newspaper reporter, radio news commentator and sports announcer. In,4-fie early 1940’s, he was appointed executive secretary to the late Rep. Winder R. Harris, 2nd District and his successor, the late Ralph H. Daughton.
In 1947, he was selected by the* National Association of Insurance Agents (now the Independent Insurance Agents of American) to head its newly expanded lobby operation in Washington.
In 1957, the magazine, The Insurance Field, selected him as “The Insurance Man of the Year for the fire and casualty insurance industry.
Upon his retirement in 1976, The Illinois Association of Insurance Agents created “The Maurice G. Herndon National Legislation Award”, presented annually to the state association that performs the most outstanding work with the U.S. Congress.
