U. S. Army historian Kim Holien will present a program on the Civil War battle of Ball’s Bluff to the Blue Ridge Civil War Round Table on Tuesday, Feb 18 at 7:30 p.m. at the Rappahannock County Library.
Here is the story about Ball’s Bluff:
It was the first autumn of the War Between the States, 1861. The soldiers and their commanders were, for the most part, as green as the summer grass they had just seen disappear into the frost of autumn.
Just 35 miles upriver from Washington, D.C., between Poolesville, Md., and Leesburg, Va., there lay a number of important Potomac River crossings. Both sides gathered their forces to guard them in the thrust and counterthrust of war.
In Washington, Maj. Gen. George McClellan was under intense pressure from the Radical Republicans in Congress for an autumn advance against the Confederate forces at Manassas Junction.
