ea. Bank road position
The School Board discussed the proposed bank road at the new commercial center that is shown to terminate at Schoolhouse Road. The issue will be considered at the Feb. 19 meeting of the county Planning Commission.
Chairman Wesley Mills said that the School Board had asked for and received a briefing from County Administrator John McCarthy on the road proposal after hearing the complaints of commercial center neighbor Ken Estes.
Hampton District School Board member Doug Baumgardner said that the School Board's only responsibility in the matter was the safety of the children.
He noted that he has "nothing against the Rappahannock National Bank whatsoever," but added that he had concerns about the road and proposed that the Board prepare and send a statement on its position to the Planning Commission prior to its hearing.
Superintendent Helen Williams noted that the proposed road would offer a second means of egress from the elementary school, should some accident result in a closure of the Schoolhouse Road intersection with Route 211, and she asked that the Board consider that as well.
In the end, the School Board agreed unanimously to approve Mr. Baumgardner's motion and he agreed to prepare the statement.
