Attribute it to higher teacher morale, greater student motivation, a new principal, an enthusiastic interim superintendent, the efforts of the director of curriculum and instruction, the work and hopes of the School Board, or all of the above — whatever the cause or causes, the results of the fall Standards of Learning (SOL) tests were phenomenal.
Richard Smith, Director of Curriculum and Instruction, reported the good news to the School Board at its meeting this week. His report showed that students achieved passing rates on nine of the 10 end of course SOL tests and, in World History II, the 52 students who took the test received the optimum result, with 100 percent of them passing.
In all areas the fall SOL results marked a multipoint improvement over last spring's test scores, and an even more significant gain over results from the year before.
Mr. Smith remarked that, "If RCHS accreditation status were to be determined by this semester’s results, the status would be Fully Accredited. "
When combined by department, passing rates were 75.5 percent for math, 91.5 percent for social studies, 85.1 percent for science, and 83.3 percent for English.
Mr. Smith also noted that students who did not succeed in passing Algebra I or English 11 will be enrolled in remediation classes in the spring semester and will have the opportunity to be retest
