The Land Use Assessment program is a result of a law passed in the Virginia General Assembly in 1971 that permits localities to adopt a program of special assessments for agriculture, horticultural, forest and open space lands.
It was designed to encourage the preservation of such land; to assure a readily available source of agricultural, horticultural, forest products and open spaces; to conserve natural resources and protect water supplies.
