military historian Kim Holien is currently the first ever historian for Fort Myer, Va. (founded in 1863 as part of the Defenses of Washington) and of Fort McNair in Washington, D. C. (founded in 1791 and home to the trial and execution of the Lincoln conspirators). From 1986 to 1989 Holien was the civilian historian for Staff Rides to Civil War battlefields for the Secretary of the Army, the Chief of Staff of the Army and the Army General Staff in the Pentagon. For this and many other successful history projects Holien has received recognition from President Ronald Reagan, Secretary of Defense Casper Weinberger, Secretary of the Army John Marsh, three Chiefs of Staff of the Army, Mrs. Douglas MacArthur, the Ambassador of Australia and the Royal Norwegian Embassy. Holien has participated in the Civil War Centennial and has narrated by radio the 125th Anniversary reenactments of Manassas, Balls Bluff, Gettysburg, New Market and The Monocacy. Currently he is the historian for the preservation of Cross Keys and Port Republic in Stonewall Jackson’s immortal Valley Campaign. Kim is also past president of the Alexandria and District of Columbia Civil War Round Tables. He is a descendant of both Union and Confederate soldiers. His Union ancestor served as an artillery officer in the Defenses of Washington and then proceeded south with General Grant from the Wilderness to Appomattox. Holien’s Confederate ancestor was one of the original fifteen members of Mosby’s Rangers. Holien will have copies of his book, Battle at Balls Bluff, for sale for $20.
