The Appalachian Club heeded concerned neighbors and dropped shooting ranges from its plans for John Kiser’s property on Route 231 at Revercomb’s Corner.
According to club president Edward Williams, “The club proposes to delete all shooting ranges and sporting clay ranges from club operations because of neighbors’ concerns.”
He'nbted in an interview that club activities will still include hunting and fishing—both of which are permissible “by right”—and that they “will reevaluate our needs for a permit to operate the club.”
Williams remarked on the compatibility of the Appalachian Club with existing agricultural uses on the farm and with the farm’s open spaces, and he revealed that he had spoken to the Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) and that they agreed the proposed uses “are completely compatible with a VOF easement already approved for the property.”
The Appalachian Club issue came to the fore at the Planning Commission meeting on March 19. Though its Special Exception application for a “firing range/shooting club (sporting clays, etc.) on 400 acres . . .” was tabled for a month, the application still received a chorus of “nays” during public comments at the meeting.
