The spring sports season got off to a bang last week with every team except JV Boys’ Soccer swinging into action. Several teams got off to good starts by getting wins during the week.
The Varsity Softball team played two non-district opponents last week to open their season. On Monday the team traveled to Page County and defeated the hosting Page Panthers 6-2. Juniors Lara Kreyling and Brittany Thornhill handled the pitching allowing Page four hits. Sophomore Rachel Gall was the hitting leader with a double, two singles and three runs batted in. Junior Molly Burke added a two-run single for the Lady Panthers.
On Wednesday the Lady Panthers played their first home game as they hosted the Bulldogs from Luray on a cold, damp spring afternoon. Thornhill and Kreyling did most of the pitching with senior Rachel Sharp finishing the last 2 2/3 innings to get the win.
With the score knotted at 22 after seven innings the Lady Panthers got three singes in the bottom of the eighth inning by Brittany Thornhill, Rachel Gall and Lara Kreyling to win their second straight game.
Coach Jon Smythe commented, “It was good to finally get outside and play. We’re still a little rusty but it’s early and we’ll get a lot better.”
