showed that the sporting clay facility is no closer than one-half mile from the nearest neighbor at Revercomb’s Corner, some of those southern F. T. Valley Road residents still felt cause to complain about commercialism and the prospect of noise.
Slate Mills’ resident Wendy Weinberg said she felt that the Appalachian Club’s “application for shooting” was only the first of a number of activities that would commercialize “one of the most beautiful areas in the county.
“It looks like the camel’s nose under the tent,” she said.
Her husband, attorney Bob Weinberg, also expressed his opposition noting that he was “told by one of the neighbors that the corporation (Appalachian Club, LLC) has not yet been formed nor is the applicant yet the lessee (sic).”
A check of Virginia State Corporation Commission records, however, does show that the Appalachian Club has been registered, and club president Williams said that he is in the final stages of negotiation on the lease with property owner, Ragland Ltd.
Concern about the Club was also expressed by Ann Richards, Jane Reed, and Mary Revercomb.Anthony Reed wrote of his concerns to Zoning Administrator John McCarthy.
Neither club president Williams nor landowner John Kiser spoke at the meeting, since they had requested that the application be tabled for a month. Later, they both expressed sensitivity to their neighbors’ needs and decided to amend the application.
