Given the wide range of weather in Rappahannock County, any consideration over traditional materials makes good common sense.
Ten years ago, I selected western red cedar lap siding to replace the tasteless beige aluminum siding on our Rappahannock County home. I, as many homeowners often do, thought this was the ideal material for long lasting appearance and permeability.
My idealistic bubble was shattered: after using a top brand stain, the cedar siding was showing signs of age after just one year of exposure. Additionally, mold and mildew spores began attacking the siding and trim on an average of three times a year.
If this wasn’t enough aggravation, I also have had to contend with ground hogs eating my cedar siding. I’m not sure what is attracting the creatures to my siding-could it be the CLOROX from washing it three times a year or could it be the Duron solid stain? And our home is in full sun. Maybe it’s the tasteful ‘Blue Ridge Gray’ color.
For our home, the use of traditional siding material is not working. It would take an individual with a bottomless bank account and a staff to maintain the exterior of our house from season to season.
I applaud the Worleys’ efforts in planning and researching materials for their home. I would have hoped that the members of the Washington ARB, in their wisdom, would have done the same.
If the Worleys’ approach is acceptable to the very fussy review requirements in Colonial Williamsburg, why wouldn’t they be acceptable for “historic” Little Washington?
