To those who declare that Congress has not yet properly exercised their war powers as directed by the Constitution, I agree. They abdicated their clear responsibility to debate and direct the movement of this country to war in 1990, offering instead vague resolutions that “Iraq is not nice” and adding (our) money; posturing themselves to point fingers if things went away.
They similarly approved an undefined, open-ended “War on Terror” which takes this country ’s armed sendees into Afghanistan and elsewhere without a stated exit strategy.
But abdication of responsibility by one branch of government does not imply that other branches must likewise abdicate. The Executive is charged, as Commander-inChief, with executing the National Defense with the means at his disposal. I believe that was intended to include defensive and even offensive action where immediately required,' to be followed bv responsible debate and direction as soon as the Legislature can assemble on the issues.
But the current administration inherited the violated cease-fire which returns this country to the state of war Congress has never implemented properly, and it must respond to the threats its resources perceive against us.
I support the Constitution. I absolutely support our Armed Services, following the lawful orders they receive, in accordance with their oath.
And, for the moment, I accept that the administration may need to take action I do not fully appreciate. It cannot be an invasion “just in case,” or for the oil companies’ profit, and I will hold them accountable for any breaches in judgment in future elections. That is how a democratic Republic is supposed to work.
