According to a new report, most Americans die away from the comfort of their own home. The report found that during one recent year, three-quarters of all Americans over age 65 died in hospitals or nursing homes while only one-quarter died at home. These percentages are quite nearly the opposite of polling data that suggest that 70% of Americans would choose to die at home. The study also found that fewer than one person in four over 65 who died in a recent year used hospice service during the final year of life. Clearly, Americans are dying without having their wishes met. One way to avert this problem is to draw up a document called an advance directive.
