At James Madison University, also popular with RCHS graduates, tuition is $2,529 per semester. Thus a Darby recipient would again already have nearly a fourth of the year’s tuition paid without any other grants, loans or financial aide.
Nonetheless even Gochenhower realizes that students are not as interested as they once were.
“Interest has declined in recent years,” he said.
He does not feel that the problem is a lack of knowledge on the student’s behalf about the scholarship though.
While he appreciates the scholarship’s thrust towards math, science and engineering he also feels that perhaps there simply are not enough Rappahannock students who are interested in these areas of study.
