Although the clean-up continues and not everybody
has gotten their electricity back, we can
give a collective sigh of relief that Piedmont Virginia was spared the worst of Hurricane Isabel. By the time the storm reached us, it had been considerably downgraded to a Tropical Depression.
Even when the storm was over, it wasn’t “over.” But we can take some comfort in the fact that the heavy rain this past Monday night didn’t arrive along with the high winds on Thursday night.
Some thanks are in order.
• First, to the state, comity and town crews who kept our roads open. Fallen trees were a big problem in all areas, with damage to powerlines and telephone service widespread. Thank you.
• The army of utility company employees who rushed to our aid was amazing. Crews from Maryland, South Carolina, Texas, Michigan and other states were on the scene quickly, restoring electricity, telephone and fiber optic service. It was dangerous, grueling work, and we appreciate what they did.
• County emergency personnel also pulled long hours before during, and after the storm, and the disaster plan went off without a hitch.
• Neighbors who helped one other through the dark nights and uncertain days before the power was restored have proven once again that during a crisis, we’re all in this together. The operative word here is sharing — ice, fresh water, fuel, generator capacity, chainsaws and much more.
As soon as everyone’s power is back on, we can say we successfully weathered this storm.
