“Without them our teachers would be lost,” he said.
The schools are not without their weaknesses though, and for him this includes the budgeting process, which he says should occur earlier in the year to allow for easier project completion as well as more competitive hiring practices.
Makela hopes the schools will relax more in the future in the face of SOLs.
He said they appear to be successful on these tests now, and thus it is time to relax and allow teachers to teach in a manner with which they are comfortable.
He feels such practices would result in higher faculty retention rates, something which he sees as a problem in recent years.
Mills, who currently holds the seat and has been chairman of the board for the past three years, was impressed with the schools’ teachers and their administration as well.
“Our teachers seem to be where the rubber hits the road,” he said.
He hopes the schools are headed in a direction that will allow them to be competitive when the voucher system, which he sees as inevitable, finally emerges. He hopes parents will choose to send their children to public school, not
