The protracted debate of the ARB focused on how little “historic, Revolutionary Washington, Virginia" has been dramatically altered architecturally bv the “over-the-top” commercialism of Sunnyside’s ongoing development.
ARB member Patrick O’Connell generally praised Sunnyside and its stated goals but pointed out that the criticism “is not about the quality of individual items, but the vast array of architectural elements being put together in such a small space.” He added, “There is no problem in adding a beautiful gate. Each (item) by itself is fine but 36 different architectural elements together cause a problem.”
