Howard, as a bicycle repairman, gambled early on the dominance of the automobile, rose to wealth and was then hit by tragedy and turned to horse racing as a diversion from grief.
Smith was a cowboy with a preternatural instinct for horse training. Jobless after the closing of both the open range and the Wild West shows, he was spotted by Howard bringing a crippled horse back to health.
