toes are cold and you head to bed. When you stub your toe, you scold yourself for being in such a hurry. Now let’s put a four-watt night light in that bathroom. You get your drink, and go back to bed without incident. The same is true if you drive into a gas station that is brightly lit. You will have night blindness for a while after you reenter the highway. And it will get worse as you get older.
But what about safety from robbers and rapists? The bad guys love bright lights. They know you can’t see them in the dark edges created by the bright lights. But they can see you perfectly. Motion activated lights are much more effective in preventing crime.
The proposed lighting ordinance does not discourage lighting. It encourages effective lighting. Seeing the Milky Way and being safer can’t be all that bad.
