But the park also offers a variety of hikes, Bair said.
One such trail he said, is Traces Trail a two mile circuit which encircles Mathews Arm Campground, roughly ten miles north of the park entrance off Route 211.
This trail boasts views of old farms, roads and orchards and according to Bair is well suited for families.
Bair said it has other draws as well. He said it is a relatively easy hike which stays close to developed areas such as the campground, and the rangers which are stationed there.
Susan Elkworth of D.C. was out recently for her first hike on this trail.
“I’m excited,” she said. “I just like to get out of the city. This is the closest and best hiking in the area.”
Les Warnell of Warrenton also enjoyed the trail and said that he comes to the park nearly every weekend.
“It’s my escape. I’m here the first day the park opens and the last day before it closes,” he said.
Warnell has been pleased with his experiences hiking and camping in the park.
“All the trails are good trails. It’s easy to get through them. They keep them all cleared,” he said.
The down side to Traces Trail? There are some large rocks which may not be, for everyone, and pets are prohibited.
