Facing off for the Stonewall-Hawthorne seat are Sharon Kilpatrick and Ken Marlor.
Kilpatrick has been filling the seat since late this summer, when it was left vacant by the death of board member Franklin Warner. A reporter and editor, first for the Rappahannock News and more recently for Rapplinks.com, she believes she has attended more school board meetings than anyone else.
Kilpatrick expressed concern regarding the number of children in the county being educated at home and at private institutions. She said she wished parents did not feel the need to send their children elsewhere to get a first-rate education.
She also expressed concerns about the new No Child Left Behind Act, which she referred to as a game of “Gotcha!” She said the state is requiring that all children meet a level of proficiency, even when some of them simply are not proficient. She felt it unfair for the state to require schools to attain such levels of achievement from all students, including those who are mentally disabled and lack proficiency in English.
