on highway construction for over 50 years, has sanctioned the rural rustic road concept and has provided guidance on its use.
Gravel roads qualifying for the program must have light, local traffic, between 50 and 500 vehicles a day. Dead end roads or “loop” roads are good candidates (a “loop” road is one which leaves a paved roadway, loops around and joins another paved roadway).
Gravel portions of Piedmont Avenue outside of Washington and Route 624, Sunnyside Orchard Road, off Harris Hollow Road, are examples of dead-end (end of state maintenance) roads that might qualify.
