Spawning migrations of the sea lamprey occur in all major drainage and Delmarva streams of Virginia, which explains this sea lamprey’s motivation for its long journey.
The long eel-like sea lamprey is parasitic. It feeds by scouring a hole in its prey with its rasping tongue and mouth filled with multiple rings of teeth, and sucking its tissue. Smaller lampreys feed on algae by sucking it from rocks.
