John Randolph DeBergh known to friends and family as “Jack” died at the age of 86 from respiratory and heart failure on May 17 at Culpeper Hospital .
Mr. DeBergh was bom Aug. 24, 1917 at Pleasant View, the family home in Washington, to the late Randolph Rutherford DeBergh and Mary Elizabeth Harris.
He graduated from Washington High School in 1935. In 1940, Mr. DeBergh graduated from Virginia Tech with a B. S. in Business Administration and with a Second Lieutenant’s commission in the U. S. Army Infantry in the Reserves.
Mr. DeBergh was called to active duty in World War II on Oct. 6, 1941 and was sent to the Philippines where he was assigned to General Douglas MacArthur’s staff in the Recovered Personnel Division.
After the Japanese surrendered, he was sent to Japan to check the Allied POW camps to be sure all had been released and to check the condition of medical and death records that had been kept by the Japanese.
He was discharged from the army with the rank of Major in 1946.
