“He had very strong feelings about the military,” said Michael F. Vargo. “Leonard was a very good, dedicated student at Wakefield, who worked hard to reach his goal of entering West Point. I am very sad about his passing. He was doing something he loved.”
Wakefield Country Day students who knew Lt. Cowherd, a student at the school since fifth grade, had been sending him emails “to let him know we were thinking of him,” said Vargo. “This made it even more difficult, losing our friend.”
Vargo convened the upper school students at Wakefield on Monday to tell them about Cowherd’s death. “It was quite a shock,” Vargo said. “Many students knew him.”
Cowherd was scheduled to rotate home at the beginning of June, but he received an extension to his deployment until August.
In addition to his parents, he leaves behind a wife of less than a year, Sarah Cerri Cowherd, of York County, a brother, Colby Cowherd, a sister Laura Cowherd, and his twin brother Charles.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been set.
