After his military service, Mr. DeBergh taught chemistry at Washington High School for one year. He established the books at the newly opened farmers co-op in 1946.
A year later, he began employment as a state Probation Officer, a position he held for 35 years, including 15 years as Chief Probation Officer for the counties of Rappahannock, Loudoun and Fauquier.
Mr. DeBergh also was an orchardist for most of his life growing peaches and apples.
For many years, Mr. DeBergh was joint master of the Rappahannock Hunt and a paddock official for the Point-to Point race circuit. He was an avid Virginia Tech football fan and enjoyed gardening.
His family said he “loved” researching family history and spending time researching at the Rappahannock Historical Society office. He also “loved” his family home, Ivy Cliffs, built in the 1700s.
Mr. DeBergh sponsored many county school sports and activities. He enjoyed reading history, skiing and tennis.
