support the group. A lar.e tour bus had been parked in the lot in front of the church, waiting for a group of hikers out visiting from Washington, DC.
The bus driver, a Rev. William Foy, offered to say an opening prayer for the meeting. Rev. Wayne Thompson of Madison who used to preach at the church, had planned to make the opening prayer. Because of advanced age and an illness, he was unable to attend.
During the meeting, another miracle of sorts happened. The long missing church book, a record of deaths, marriages, baptisms and other events, was presented to Presgraves by Geraldine Payne, next door neighbor of the church. She had received the book from Nina Sisk, a distant cousin, while caring for Nina in her old age.
Because the church had been inactive at the time of Nina Sisk’s death, she was most concerned that it be held in safe keeping. One of the original church members, defined as someone who was baptized at the church, took it in hopes that it could be used to try and contact any other living original members.
As the tour bus pulled away, one hiker thrust a $5 bill into the hands of a participant with the instruction to, “Use this to save the church.”
Adjoining property owners have been contacted to see if anyone lays a claim to owning the property. The church, established in October 1865, was built on donated land. The last official services were held there in the mid 1960s, although there were summer revivals
