Cruise into

harmony

Every time we see the phalanxes of motorcycles

roaring west on Route 211 toward Amissville,

Little Washington, and Sperryville, we cannot help but recollect the black-and-white images of Marlon Brando’s gang descending on a sleepy make believe California town in the landmark 1953 biker film “The Wild One.’'

The town of Hollister, Calif., was terrorized for real over the 4th of July weekend, 1947, by 4,000 motorcyclists. By the time their three-day orgy ended, many bikers had been arrested for public drunkenness and indecent exposure, some deputies had been locked into their own jail, and quite a few businesses had been trashed. And a movie idea was bom.

Nothing like that is possible nowadays, certainly not here. Hollister was a tumbleweed town barely with a single telephone and police who could neither cope nor reach reinforcements.
