“But some of us have been with Rappahannock County for over 20 years and new employees starting salaries are already larger than our current compensation, and with this additional supplement (going to the Sheriff’s deputies), this is truly degrading (to us) and unfair.”
The Sheriff had sold the supplemental raise to the supervisors primarily with the argument that his deputies were training at the expense of Rappahannock’s taxpayers, then leaving the county for higher paying jobs in neighboring counties.
However, the same loss of other deputies, like the women making the request for a supplemental, has not occurred, and therefore, the same inducement to the board does not apply, because of these deputies’ loyalty and permanence.
The supervisors indicated that they would address this issue, which they had expected to be raised, according to County Administrator John McCarthy, at a later date. It was anticipated, according to some supervisors, tossing ideas around, that they would contemplate a range of redress, hum granting the $4,000 requested to formulating a schedule to compensate the women according to their longevities in office.
