his wife, Martha Hughes, bought sixand-one-half acres on Jordan River Farm and after considerable research, started this past Aug. 12 making bricks for their 2,300-square-foot home.
They are finding that the project involves more labor than they planned, but when they finish, their house will be nationally recognized for its energy efficiency and innovative design and materials. Their project also is the subject of a one-hour PBS documentary.
The couple has to hand make 5,000 bricks, each weighing 25 pounds, and after three weeks of hard work, they still have 2,000 bricks to go.
The first floor of the three-bedroom house covers 1,500 square feet and includes a master bedroom and study. The second floor with 800 square feet includes two bedrooms for the couple’s four daughters—Naomi, 9, Joanna, 11, Emily, 21, and Rebekka, 26. Weingarten anticipates the total construction to run about $320,000.
