On the first play, Nick Compton went off-tackle on the left side from six yards out to score the Panthers’ only touchdown. Paige Payne kicked the point after to put the Panthers up 7-6.
“Nick is a groundhog. All of his yards are hard, right up the gut. Hell run over you before hell go around you,” Pullin said.
After the score, Paine’s linedrive kickoff into the second row hit a Chincoteague player and the Panthers recovered it. Berry took a knee three times to run out the clock, and the game was over. The first varsity victory in RCHS history was in the books.
“It’s better than the alternative. It’s the first varsity high school game in the school’s 45year history. It goes in the book as a ‘w’ and it doesn’t matter if it’s 30-6 or 7-6, a win is a win,” said Pullin.
