He was proud ol ms Choctaw heritage, and was an active member of the Culpeper Church of Christ. He also held memberships in the Rappahannock Farmers Association, the Virginia Cattlemen’s Association, the Arctic Institute of North America, the National Cowboy Hall of Fame, the Heritage Foundation, the Archaeological Institute of America, the Republican Party of Virginia, and the Rappahannock Lions Club.
Lt. Col. Purdy was a Political Science graduate of the University of Arkansas and earned an MBA from University of Tennessee Knoxville. He also attended the Command and General Staff College at Leavenworth, Kan.
