In his presentation, Humphrey will highlight all the farms in the county that have llamas, why they have them, and what they are doing with them.
A Q&A will feature a panel of local llama owners.
Humphrey also will discuss the basics of llama care and maintenance, and share interesting research findings about the use of llamas as guard animals.
Dr. William Franklin of Iowa State University has studied llamas and their close kin, alpacas, guanacos and vicunas for over three decades. Franklin reports that the introduction of llamas to guard sheep typically reduces annual losses to predators from 11 percent of the flock to one percent. Due to their alertness, keen sight, curiosity, and willingness to investigate anything that comes into the pasture, llamas have also been used effectively to guard chickens, cattle and horses.
