Rappahannock County artist Steven Kenny is having an exhibit of his recent oil paintings at the Middle Street Gallery in Washington from Friday, Sep. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 26. An artist’s reception is on Sunday, Sept 5 from 2-6 p.m.
“Entitled Anthropics,” the show features 12 works on canvas by this painter well known for his surreal combinations of living things. Kenny’s style of painting, often described as magic realism, employs intense color and fine detail to convincingly merge the human figure with a variety of natural elements.
These images depict human beings, plants, and animals existing in symbiotic states. These beautiful and thoughtprovoking “portraits” emphasize the innate connections with the earth and all living things— connections which seem more tenuous by the day.
It has been two years since Kenny’s last area exhibition. Since that time he has been awarded a fellowship by the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Honorable Mention in the 7th Annual Georgetown International Art Exhibition.
He has been featured in volume 51 of New American Paintings, and volume 9 and 10 of Spectrum: The Best in Contemporary Fantastic Art. In addition to being represented by the Klaudia Marr Gallery in Santa Fe, Kenny recently has joined the Trinity Gallery in Atlanta. Upcoming group exhibitions are scheduled at the Light Street Gallery in Baltimore and the Gescheidle Gallery in Chicago.
