with two close friends who began painting, led him to try painting for a' year. That one year was 20 years ago and he has studied and painted continuously ever since.
His works are in private and corporate collections in the United States, Canada, Germany, France, and Spain and in 1995, he was elected to “signature” artist membership in the prestigious Baltimore Watercolor Society.
Black also happens to be a jazz clarinetist and the love of improvisation in jazz music figures prominently in his approach to painting. He starts his paintings with a color or a shape and, without knowing what the outcome will be, he works forward from that first inspiration in a rational way, much like a jazz musician moving forward through improvisation—the end remains unknown, but the artist moves forward rationally and composes “on the fly.”
