Often referred to as a “Wonder horse,' Saluter s career certainly didn't start out as much.
He was sent to trainer Jack Fisher at age 4 after a dismal record at the flat track and an equally modest start over hurdles with a former owner.
Fisher offered to market the leggy but very plain bay as a field hunter and purchased him for $2,500.
‘I didn't like him’ at first. Fisher admitted. “He didn't seem to have much talent and he wasn't a very good jumper.'
The horse also pulled various antics, including throwing Fisher off on the way to the start of his first timber race at Geneseo. N.Y.
However. Saluter won that race and caught Fisher by surprise with his unique ability to move out toward the end of the race.
In the meantime, at Fishers Kingfisher Farm, the horse had
also learned a bit about jumping cleanly over solid fences, ana his skill set expanded.
In the spring of 1994. Saluter — then 5 — became the youngest Virginia Gold Cup winner since 1953.
