Dominion belongs to a kind of consortium of elec* trical utilities that wants multi-state approval for a transmission line that would link producers in the Ohio Valley with users in the Northeast.
Regionally and locally, the line will have an array of negative environmental effects, according to PEC and others.
They argue it would provide a huge and growing market for coal-burning plants, compounding airpollution problems.
Opponents also believe the line would be an eyesore that would devalue real estate. (Dominion would need to acquire rights-of-way across hundreds of acres to build the line).
The proposed line would be suspended from 15-story steel towers, spaced about 1.000 feet apart along the 00-plus mile route. (An alternative route for the line is along Interstate 06, using the Virginia Department of Transportation right-ofway.)
Dominion proposed a line through the region in 2000. That fall it began holding a series of informational meetings in some of the counties that would be directly affected by the project.
The SCC last summer and fall conducted public hearings on the proposal. Thousands off opponents attended them.
