‘Great second half.’ Those were the words of Rappahannock County boys soccer coach Shay Bell after the Panthers’ tough loss to George Mason.
Jake Rosenbaum and Jacob Racer scored Rappahannock’s only goals Tuesday night in a 6-2 loss. The talented Mustangs quickly netted four goals in the first half, taking control of the game early on.
Mason maintained possession of the ball throughout the first half, leading them to a crucial penalty kick. Rappahannock goalie Ben Pendleton miraculously blocked it, but Mason immediately rebounded the ball into the back of the net.
The Mustangs scored their second and third goals within minutes, but the Panthers refused to give up. Within 10 minutes, Mason was up 4-0.
Well-placed goal kicks allowed several close shots, but the Panthers remained scoreless. Rosenbaum ended the drought late in the first half with an impressive shot from near midfield. Great saves from Pendleton kept the game within reach, and Rappahannock closed the half down 4-1.
Armed with an optimistic outlook, the Panthers came out confident in the second half. Senior Will Sonnett powered the defense and held Mason scoreless early in the half. Sonnett’s long goal kicks created scoring opportunities for Rappahannock, but the Panthers’ turnovers kept them from finding the back of the net.
Stellar goal play from Pendleton proved the Panthers were not ready to give in. The aggressive play continued, even after Mason netted their fifth and sixth goals. After multiple shots narrowly missed the net, sophomore Jacob Racer finally scored with a beautiful shot in the top right comer of the goal.
Rappahannock kept up the consistent shooting down to the last minute, as Mustangs goalie Tyler Back blocked a tough last-second shot.
