Feeding the sport of steeplechasing from its grassroots, the opening event on Saturday’s Virginia Gold Cup program is the championship for the 2008 junior field masters ‘chase series.
Sponsored by Watson Wyatt Worldwide, the junior race is open to young riders on ponies or horses who have competed on the Virginia spring circuit to qualify.
Ponies or horses must be 5 or older, and must have hunted with any foxhunting, beagle pack or pony club.
In the unique “race,” riders follow the leader, or “field master” at a hunting pace over a flagged course about two miles long, with about a dozen 3-foot-high fences. At a designated place, the field master releases the field for the final dash to the finish.
Riders wear racing or hunting attire.
