There are two main categories of obstacle — timber (solid post-and-rail panels that require clean, careful jumping) and hurdles (softer bushy jumps made for skipping through at speed.)
Another category of racing. open steeplechases (sometimes called crosscountry races or the funnynamed “Steeplethon.” as at Great Meadow) conjoin timber and hurdles, plus a variety of other obstacles, such as stone walls, water jumps, ditches and banks (much like the Irish combatants found in the 18th century.)
