Her mansion, Villa Lewaro. in New York state, is fully restored and privately owned, but tours are still available.
Nannie Helen Burroughs (1879-1961) was bom in Culpeper and raised in Orange County, Va. A social activist, orator, educator and organizational genius, at age 21, Ms. Burroughs gave a speech at the National Baptist Convention. Her motto was, “We specialize in the holy and the possible,” and she subsequently organized the Women's Convention which, three years later, had over one million members. The handbook for that organization was entitled, “What to do and how to do." A staunch supporter of industrial and vocational training, she opened a training school in 1909 that specialized in typing, sewing and cooking. Sis Burroughs left a legacy of thousands of letters, handbooks, schools and inspiration.
