George Mason head coach Jamie Scharff could not help but be elated with the play of Morse, sophomore Anuraag Sensharma, junior Katie Buenneke and senior captain Amelia Nemitz.
The Mustangs, who did not have a returning starter in its lineup, enjoyed an incredible season. All of their losses were to Rappahannock County.
“George Mason gave us a run,” Collins said. “They were never going to be easy. They weren’t going to go down quietly.”
After the team celebration, Collins planted a kiss on the trophy.
“Holding the trophy. To see all the work pay off, it’s amazing,” he said. “You think of all the people you played with, and at the same time, all the people you played against. People who are now at the Ivies, UVA, Stanford and North Carolina.”
He also wondered aloud what Emily Hilscher would say. The two were teammates during his freshman year. Hilscher was killed during the Virginia Tech shootings in April 2007.
“I definitely know that Emily would be very proud of us today,” he smiled.
