Dorothy Carter Butler, bom in Rappahannock County in 1925, teacher and first African-American member of the Rappahannock County School Board, was the third woman honored in this presentation. She was a graduate of Manassas Industrial School and Virginia State University in Petersburg. She taught at the Washington Graded School on Piedmont Avenue, at Washington Elementary and at the new Rappahannock Elementary SchooL Always the teacher. Mrs. Butler was named Woman of the Year by her church.
Mrs. Butler was married to the late Howard Butler, owner of the former Horseshoe Inn and Comer Store in Sperryville on Route 211 They have two daughters. Nan and Doretha. Nan But ler Roberts had not told her mother that she would be1 included in this presentation and Mrs. Butler was taken completely by surprise. It was a wonderful honor for her mother, a woman much loved and respected in our community.
