I am surprised that, to date, none of the respondents to Mr. Carl Ebom's "Forum" piece < Rappahannock News. Feb. 12, 20091 has mentioned the bizarre claims relating to the Constitution of the United .ates, the bogus George Washing n quotation, or boomerang rhetorical questions he employed defending his views on the nation's Christian heritage.
He assures us that “The founding fathers left behind many letters and other writings that clearly show' they considered this a Christian nation. The founders of our country put God in our constitution! The supreme law of the land exemplifies the' position of God held in the hearts and minds of the founding fathers.”
Where, exactly? My copy contains no mention of God. The sole reference to religion is found in the First Amendment. It states. “Congress shall make no lawrespecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the Tree exercise thereof. ..” The framers of the constitution were educated men aware of the hubristic and horrible excesses committed under the auspices of established religion They knew the danger inherent in assigning secular prominence to any religious belief.
