By Kim Nelson Special to the Rappahannock News * It has been 16 years since the Rappahannock County’s 4-H delegates went to Japan. Back then, they were Marcia Freeman, Catherine Krebser, Courtney Welch and Mark Jenkins.
On June 11, Steven Nelson of Rappahannock’s 4-H Club continued the tradition and boarded a plane from Dulles Airport on his way to Japan and Narita Airport.
He is the son of Bruce and Kim Nelson of Amissville.
Steven Nelson has been interested in Japanese culture and language for many years. He has been helping with the “All Things Japanese” class at the 4-H camp in Front Royal. The camp offers Japanese exchange students a chance to experience U.S. culture and language and activities at the camp. Nelson has kept in touch with several Japanese students through e-mail and Facebook.
During his time in Japan, Nelson will learn the language and the culture. There also will be school Field trips to museums. The school is in Tokyo. He will live for four weeks with a family - which includes two younger siblings, a brother and a sister
in an apartment in Kawasaki. The family plans to take him to Mount Fuji.
The second four weeks Nelson will live with another family in Nagoya about two hours away, arriving by train. The family has four younger siblings, three girls and one boy. While living there he will attend their 4H camp, climb mountains, participate in skits and eat local foods and exchange souvenirs.
Nelson will present a photo album to each of his host families which represents his daily life in Rappahannock County. There will be pictures of the schools, friends, animals, family, band events, quiz bowl events and, of course.
