The old saying goes, “It always
happens in threes.” Well, this week's issue of the Rappahannock News (June 11 edition) has delivered three sad news stories.
The first I view with mixed emotions - Dr. Bob Chappell’s retirement as school superintendent. I knew him first as my nononsense, hard- nosed principal. He was tough but fair and always commanded respect; respect he earned by treating others with respect.
I now know him as a champion for our county’s school children (mine included). We would be hard pressed to find another individual that has done more for this county during the last 10 - 12 years or ever for that matter. His record speaks for itself. I’m happy for him and hope he enjoys his retirement. He surely will be missed by the students and parents of this county for whom he cares so much.
Secondly is the closing of Hackley’s Store - how sad. Personally, for over 30 years
